Self Care Isn’t Selfish
Self care is a habit more avoided than celebrated due to the negative complex associated with selfish behavior yet self care is the most humble habit we can adopt as a way of sharing our best version of ourselves with the world and our local communities.
WHAT IS SELF CARE?
Self care is the practice of personal preservation and improvement of one’s health physically, emotionally and mentally. A person invested in self care understands the value they posses and therefore takes an active role in protecting their own well being, happiness and balanced state of mind to reduce stress and enhanced performance.
WHY HAS SELF CARE BEEN PERCEIVED AS SELFISH?
According to Karyl McBride PhD. of Psychology Today the selfish complex associated with self care is instilled in us as children by narcissistic parents, teachers and people of authority. As children many of us were often told we were selfish as children because it was natural for us to ask for what we want with complete expectation we would reieve it. if our parents, teachers or people of authority could not provide what we needed or wanted from them, it may have left you feeling guilty or even develop long term issues with self preservation that can lead to destructive behavior or bad lifestyle habits.
There is a distinct difference between self care and self=absorbed or narcissistic behavior. Where self care is about taking care of your own well being, feelings and emotional state to ensure you are able to take care of others, act with love and be an active member within your relationships, families, organizations and society. Self-absorbed behavior is focused on self gratification from bad behaviors like taking advantage of others or the use of unethical practices to get ahead. Maybe even misuse of people and resources to get what you want at all cost.
This type of behavior can lead to unhealthy stress, circumstances and even illness if not redirected.
Here are a few ways you can learn to apply self care without feeling selfish:
- REFRAME FROM FEELING GUILTY
- PRIORITZE YOUR NEEDS FIRST
